Day Tours - Cape West Coast Peninsual
Embark on an experience of a lifetime, and discover the Cape West Coast Peninsula, a region celebrated for its unique people and extraordinary places.
The picturesque seaside town of Saldanha is situated on the northern corner of the largest bay in South Africa. On a clear day Table Mountain can be seen from the Adam & Eve rock formation situated on the hill above Saldanha.
There is a short walking trail at Hoedjieskop in the centre of the town to a vantage point, which provides a panoramic view of the bay. The bay's ideal location makes it a paradise for water-sport enthusiasts. Its local economy is strongly dependent on fishing, mussels, seafood and the harbour trade, as well as the established steel industry.
St Helena Bay, known locally as 'Die Agterbaai', is one of the world's prime fishing centres. Fed by the nutrient-rich Benguela current, the waters teem with marine life, which provides the livelihood for its coastal inhabitants.
The main harbour at Sandy Point bustles with activity and shipbuilders and fishermen rub shoulders as they go about their daily work. The fisher-folk haul in the 'trek' nets to harvest the day's catch and the women's sleigh of hand as they 'vlek' snoek is a marvel to behold. Their cultural heritage is unique and the quaint tongue of the locals will bring a smile to the face of those who stop to savor their vernacular.
Paternoster is a historic and peaceful fishing village bordering the Cape Columbine Nature Reserve, where the last manned lighthouse of South Africa can be viewed. Whales and dolphins are regular visitors. Admire the strong fisherman architecture, while enjoying a relaxing stay accompanied by stunning sunsets and exquisite seafood cuisine.
South Africa’s largest natural bay can be found in Saldanha, whilst St Helena Bay is not so much one bay, rather a collection of 18 stunning bays.
Vredenburg is the business and administrative hub of the region while Hopefield is known for its spectacular displays of wildflowers in an and around town, as well as for the fossil deposits, which can be seen at the Fossil Park.
Further north, Velddrif is situated at the mouth of the Berg River, and the estuary attracts large numbers of flamingos, spoonbills, avocets and glossy ibis. The Rocher Pan Nature Reservenear Dwarskersbos is a must for bird watchers.
