The town of Stellenbosch is the second oldest town in South Africa (after Cape Town) and developed from a colony of dutch settlers to whom land had been granted on the banks of the Eerste River. The name Stellenbosch was given to a small island in the Eerste River by Simon van der Stel, Commander of the Cape, who had encamped there with his entourage in 1679.
Cheetah Outreach and Eagle Encounters at Spier
Visit the Cheetah Outreach facility and experience the excitement of a personal encounter with hand raised ambassador cheetahs. (Don't forget to bring your camera!). Spier has made land available to a group of hand-raised cheetahs in the care of the Cheetah Outreach Programme. Founded in December 2001 by Hank and Tracy Chalmers, Eagle Encounters is a bird of prey rehabilitation, education, conservation and Eco-tourism center. As a self-funded, non-profit establishment, we rely on the income generated by tourism to drive our numerous programmers.
The Giraffe House
The Giraffe House Wildlife Awareness Centre is privately owned and situated on 15 Hectares of land between Klapmuts and Stellenbosch. Founder and animal showman, Brian Foster, has a gift as an 'animal whisperer' and is often seen sporting a Crocodile Dundee style hat to complete the reputation

The Stellenbosch Botanical Garden is the oldest university botanic garden in South Africa. The Garden is beautifully maintained and includes three glass houses (tropical-, succulent- and karoo houses), Lotus lily / Koi fish pond, Japanese Garden, Herb Garden and arboretum.

The Toy and Miniature Museum in Stellenbosch houses a collection of 1:12 scale miniatures, room boxes, miniature houses, antique dolls, cars, cuddly toys and many others.

A half day tour on the Stellenbosch Wine Bus leaves from Beau Joubert Winery which is a 350 year old winery and moves onto De Morgenzon. At this winery baroque music plays and wild flowers have been planted in the vineyards
